PRINCIPAL STRUCTURAL ENGINEER.

AREVA NP, SAN JOSE, CA.

DECEMBER 2008 – NOVEMBER 2011.

·        Dr. Elzeiny was nominated to Areva College Experts.

·        The EPR is a third generation pressurized water reactor design. It has been designed and developed mainly by Areva NP, Electricité de France in France, and Siemens AG in Germany. In Europe this reactor design was called European Pressurized Reactor (EPR), Areva was in the process of licensing the EPR for US use by meeting the standard established by the nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Dr. Elzeiny role was to perform structural analysis of the reactor containment structure. The analysis included earthquake time history load cases, generation of in-structural response spectra to design attached equipment. Dr. Elzeiny successfully defended his analysis before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

·        Diablo Canyon Power Plant, which sits on approximately 1,000 acres on the Pacific coast, has operated since 1985 with its two Westinghouse Pressurized Water Reactor units. It supplies California with electricity. Dr. Elzeiny's role was to perform nonlinear seismic analysis of massive unanchored requirements.

·        The Bellefonte Nuclear Generating Station (BLN) is a partially completed nuclear power plant located in Hollywood, Alabama. The site has sat idle for more than 20 years and some spare parts have been taken from the two incomplete units. In 2011, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) board of directors approved a plan to restart construction of the Bellefonte Unit 1 reactor. Dr. Elzeiny role was to update old design calculations to meet the most recent design criteria of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Dr. Elzeiny worked on the layout and design of pipelines and supporting structures including evaluation under seismic loading conditions.

·        Dr. Elzeiny has authored in-house software to process and smooth the In-structural Response Spectra generated by GTSTRUDL. The software passed a rigorous verification and validation procedure and it was approved for use.

MOX PROJECT AT SAVANNAH RIVER SITE, AIKEN, SC.

SEISMIC DESIGN ENGINEER.

NOVEMBER 2008 – DECEMBER 2008.

In 1999, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) signed a contract with a consortium, now called Shaw-Areva MOX Services, LLC to design, build, and operate a Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility. This facility will be a major component in the United States’ program to dispose of surplus weapon-grade plutonium. Dr. Elzeiny was responsible of performing design reviews and verification of Mox Structural components.

LEAD STRUCTURAL ENGINEER.

URS CORPORATION – WASHINGTON DIVISION, AIKEN, SC.

JANUARY 2007 – OCTOBER 2008.

·        The Hanford Site is a mostly decommissioned nuclear production complex operated by the United States federal government on the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington. The site has been known by many names, including: Hanford Project, Hanford Works, Hanford Engineer Works or HEW and Hanford Nuclear Reservation or HNR. For more than two decades, the government has worked to dispose of 56 million gallons of nuclear and chemical waste in underground, leak-prone tanks at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington State.

·        Dr. Elzeiny role was to lead the structural group responsible for the analysis and design of concrete and steel structures for nuclear facilities. In addition, Dr. Elzeiny was responsible of the analysis of special cases such as building coupled model for the filter cave area that includes modeling of filters, filter housings, platform, ducts, pipes and other equipment. The model is used for the seismic analysis and design of these components. He successfully defended analysis results and design before a panel of external reviewers.

·        The Integrated Waste Treatment Unit (IWTU) Idaho National Laboratory processes liquid waste and encapsulates the waste into a solid for off-site disposal. Dr. Elzeiny role was to perform the Seismic Analysis and Design of steel structures.

PRINCIPLE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER.

 PARSONS, AIKEN, SC.

DECEMBER 2005 – JANUARY 2007.

·        By the end of the Cold War, the Savannah River Site (SRS) changed its focus to environmental restoration and remediation. In 2004, Parsons was retained to design, build, commission, and operate for 1 year the Salt Water Treatment Plant Facility (SWPF), which will eventually process 31 million gallons of radioactive salt waste stored onsite in large underground tanks at the SRS. Dr. Elzeiny was responsible for the seismic analysis and design of SWPF including dynamic soil-structure interaction. He handled the generation of Floor In-Structural Response Spectra. He successfully defended analysis and design results and design before the DOE board of defense.

·        Dr. Elzeiny has authored in-house software to process and smooth the In-structural Response Spectra generated by GTSTRUDL. The software passed a rigorous verification and validation procedure and it was approved for use in the Salt Waste Treatment Facility in Savannah River Site.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

HARZA ENGINEERING COMPANY, LOS ANGELES, CA.

AUGUST 1995 – AUGUST 1997.

·        The Rockwell facility had a weak gypsum concrete diaphragm of 250,000 square foot. Due to the weakness of the diaphragm, the insurance premium was high. Dr. Elzeiny performed volubility analysis and retrofitted the facility to decrease the probability of failure that resulted into significant reduction of insurance premiums.

·        Dr. Elzeiny handled the structural design of commercial and residential structures, vulnerability analysis of concrete/steel buildings using Finite Element analysis, and vulnerability analysis of steel and concrete building. He was also responsible of the seismic analysis of electric power pushing for transformers. He performed the seismic analysis of dam spillway radial steel gates, the seismic assessment and the qualification of equipment.

Dr. Elzeiny performed volubility analysis and retrofitted the facility to decrease the probability of failure that resulted into significant reduction of insurance premiums.

·        The Big Tujunga Dam is a concrete arch dam in Los Angeles County, California, spanning Big Tujunga Creek northeast of Sunland. It serves mainly for flood control. The water level of the Big Tujunga Reservoir was kept at low level to avoid failure during an Earthquake. Dr. Elzeiny role was to evaluate the highest possible water level that will reduce the probability of failure of the dam to an acceptable level specified by the code.

·        Dr. Elzeiny authored a  customized finite element program for the  Paul Getty Museum in California to allow the non-technical users to perform seismic analysis of the museum floors crowded with displays and audience. The output was simplified spectrum of colors that represent the D/C ratios, which were easy to understand by non-technical users. The strength and dimensions of all galleries were stored in a database and retrieved to calculate the D/C rations.

·        Dr. Elzeiny worked on the layout and design of pipelines and supporting structures including evaluation under seismic loading conditions.
