Next: The Finite Element Technique Up: DEVELOPMENT OF PRACTICAL DESIGN Previous: Allowable Stress

Proposed Development Procedure

It is proposed to employ the sophisticated finite element analysis technique, developed by the proposal investigators [3], to come up with simplified but accurate design guidelines for unanchored liquid storage tanks by performing the following tasks:

1.

Modify the mechanical analog for anchored liquid storage tanks to include the effect of base plate uplifting

2.

Establish relationships between the seismic overturning moment estimated from the mechanical analog and the base axial stress at the bottom of tank shell

3.

Develop an efficient technique to calculate the allowable buckling stress
